The Ion window manager

June 12th, 2005

So after being hooked to OS X for about 4 months, I’m trying to wean myself back onto a Linux desktop. And to do that, I have a new toy: the Ion window manager. Ion is great–instead of overlapping windows, everything is tiled. Always. It seemed kind of nutty at first, but after a couple hours it’s getting to be pretty neat. For example, resizing windows is just an alt-drag, and switching desktops, focusing different frames, and cycling through tabs is cake.

In other news, I finally made the jump and switched email providers from Slashmail to Fastmail (note: referral link). The “Enhanced” plan is $40/year and gives a 2gb message store, 250mb webspace (see tommykho.com), has great filtering, a fast web interface, and IMAP!

Enough procrastinating…finals week begins…

I have a really bad habit

June 4th, 2005

Everytime finals near, I start reading sci-fi books. Last quarter, it was Domain, Altered Carbon, and Spin State. This quarter, it’s Sphere, and likely Broken Angels and Market Forces. This past week was the easiest week of my quarter…and next week doesn’t look any harder.

Why stop with those–I still have a signed copy of Quicksilver I haven’t gotten to.

I can finally print from my Mac

June 4th, 2005

I have a Minolta 1350W printer–the W in the model number means it’s supposedly Windows-only. Thankfully I got the printer working this morning on my Mac Mini, so I won’t be shelling out $150 or so for another printer.

I extended some great instructions I found online, and posted it on my wiki: Minolta 1350W. Wikis are awesome.

Edit: Wikis, not that awesome.

So I started a list of things I wish software could do

And you can find My Sofware Wish List. It used to be on a wiki, until I figured out that hand-editing html is easier than keeping around a one-man wiki.
