~/.netrc

August 29th, 2005

I discovered ~/.netrc today when I was trying to script an FTP upload. It has a simple format:

machine [hostname]
  login [username]
  password [password]

and presto, just pipe commands to `ftp [hostname]` for easy uploads.

Edit: Oh, and here are the two scripts I wrote in my boredom: one, two, and output. The first script outputs the size of GAIM logs for each buddy, and the second one uploads it.

Spreading the Linux love

August 18th, 2005

I just wanted to share that you can have free Ubuntu CDs mailed to you (no catch) from the Ubuntu CD Distribution Database. I got a couple several months ago and they’ve come in real handy. Each set includes an install CD and a live CD (pop it in, no installation necessary). Ubuntu’s marks itself as “Linux for Human Beings,” implying, of course, that the distro I use at work makes me super-human.

I’m thinking about passing these out on Bruin Walk. Anyone interested?

I want some Sonic goodness

August 7th, 2005

SONIC (supposedly a nationwide burger chain) has been playing commericials in LA for the longest time, advertising their burgers and slushes like crazy. I thought I’d make it my White Castle today, except I found out that the closest restaurants are in ANAHEIM and freakin BAKERSFIELD.

Utterly useless.

Computer joke

August 4th, 2005

I was browsing around at work today while waiting for a build to finish, and this gave me a chuckle.

from libstdc++-v3 HOWTO:

Stringstreams (defined in the header <sstream>) are in this author’s opinion one of the coolest things since sliced time.

Get it? It’s a pun on the sliced bread expression. HAHA.

Summer Lovin’

August 3rd, 2005

I just upgraded to WordPress 1.5, so I felt compelled to post something.

The past month and a half has been great–I took off for Europe the Monday after finals and had an awesome I’m-so-going-back time in London, Brussels, Amsterdam, and Paris. As soon as I organize my pictures and bug others for theirs, I’ll post them.

Then, I started my internship at Google (which started the day after I got back from Paris and runs until the day before school starts). I’ll write more about that later.

Lastly, this Swatch watch I bought after seeing on Boing Boing finally arrived from Australia. It’s simple and light, but no one ever mentioned that you can hear it ticking 5 feet away…

Okay last thing…The hjkl navigation in vi is a hard habit to break when I’m away from a terminal. Adding in the Dvorak mess, I’ve had a hard time writing this entry.
