My computer sucks

October 30th, 2005

I wrestled with compiling a kernel the Debian way (a la make-kpkg) yesterday for my networking class and realized even unpacking the tarball was painfully slow on my current machine (1.1ghz AMD, 512 ram, slow drive)–painfully slow in the “bzip+tar take up 20% cpu and kill the disk” kind of way.

So I surfed up to Mware and ordered a new computer: AMD X2 3800+ (horray for dual cores!) with 1gb ram and a Seagate (Sea-GREAT!) SATA drive. I’m excited for the blazing-fast kernel compile times I’ll be experiencing in the near future :)

This Starship Size Comparison Chart has been sitting in my AIM profile for a while, and I thought I’d dump it here for posterity.

Engineering Free Food Calendar

October 6th, 2005

Since there are so many engineering events at UCLA that offer free (and sometimes good) food, I gave it its own calendar in iCal. Here are the fruits of my labor: UCLA Engineer’s Free Food Calendar.

Bon appetit!

Alternative to xpdf

October 6th, 2005

I stumbled across ggv (which my distro conveniently pre-installed) while looking for an alternative to xpdf. It has pretty font rendering (none of the jaggies of xpdf) and has a usable interface. Go GNOME!

And now to catch up on reading some networking papers…
